Pain of any sort is a negative phenomenon. Headache is one such affair for which usually people seek for medical care. On account of its nature, headache can indeed rob a person of his quality of life it ultimately results in lost productivity.  Following few lines will throw light in regard to this debilitating sickness….

What is a headache?

Headache is defined as a pain arising from the head or upper neck of the body. The pain originates from the tissues and structures that surround the brain. This pain may be a dull ache, sharp, throbbing, constant, mild, or intense.

TYPES :-

1.    Tension headaches

Tension  headaches, the most common type, feel like a constant ache or pressure around the head, especially at the temples or back of the head and neck.  Experts believe these may be caused by the contraction of neck and scalp muscles (including in response to stress), and possibly changes in brain chemicals.

2.    Cluster headaches

Cluster headaches, which affect more men than women, are recurring headaches that occur in groups or cycles. They appear suddenly and are characterized by severe, debilitating pain on one side of the head, and are often accompanied by a watery eye and nasal congestion or a runny nose on the same side of the face.

3.    Sinus headaches

Symptoms include pain in the forehead or between the eyes , toothache, feeling of fullness in the mid-face , stuffy nose, and congestion

4.    Migraine headaches

Patients suffering from migraine usually describe it as an intense, throbbing or pounding headache which generally affects only one side of the head. Migraine symptoms can be of two types - Common and Classic migraine. The major difference between the two is that there is no preceding 'aura' in common migraine, such as visual distortions or hand numbness.

CAUSES /TRIGGERING FACTORS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT  :-

1.    Your personality-Stress

Certain traits, including rigidity, reserve, and obsessivity may make you headache-prone.

That's because it causes fluctuations in cortisol and adrenaline—the fight-or-flight hormones.   Meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and massage can help to overcome it.

2.    Dehydration: -

Sufficient intake of water is must to keep you away from a episode. Take fruits and veggies containing plenty of water.

3.    Skipping meals

Skipping meals triggers them too, because the brain is hypersensitive to fluctuations in blood sugar. Eat and drink water regularly, and make sure those meals high in protein to help keep you satiated and maintain blood sugar levels

4.    Too much caffeine

A little can help headaches but too much can trigger them. If caffeine is causing your pain, gradually cut back until you have caffeine no more than two days a week.

5.    Inactivity

Those who are inactive are more likely to get headaches than those who worked out. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of cardio a day, five days a week, to relieve stress, send blood to the brain, and get feel-good endorphins flowing.

6.    Sleep deprivation

Insomnia is associated with low levels of the hormone serotonin. That causes blood vessels in the brain to dilate and activate the trigeminal nerve. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day (even on weekends!),

7.    Eating wrong things

The most likely offenders: Foods that contain the amino acid tyramine (like red wine and aged cheeses), nitrates (hot dogs, and other processed meats), or the amino acid phenylalanine (chocolate). All three substances cause blood vessels to constrict and then expand.

Eat: Spinach, oat bran, barley, fish oil, olive oil, sunflower and pumpkin seeds
Avoid: Red wine, beer, chocolate, aged cheese, processed meats

8.    You're hormonal

The dip in oestrogen that occurs just before your period can lead to migraines. Similar hormonal fluctuations can also trigger headaches during pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause.

Headache and homeopathy :

Usually whenever patient experiences such a headache they themselves often start off with paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen or other analgesics. Most of the pain killers are toxic to kidneys and liver which are vital organs. Dependence on pain killers may also hamper the effectiveness of endorphins, the body's natural pain killers.

Homeopathic treatment lays great emphasis on a person’s “constitution”. This relates to one’s state of health , including one’s temperament , sensibilities, sensitivities , idiosyncrasies, and inherited or acquired characteristics.Homeopathic treatment of headache addresses both physical and emotional imbalances in a person.Research studies have clearly demonstrated that homeopathy treatment for headache has significant help to offer to patients in terms of reduced frequency of headaches, reduced intensity of the attacks and improvement in quality of life after commencing treatment.
